Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, St. Luke's Hospital, Obstetrics and Gynecology Research Foundation - University of Malta

Prof. Mark P. Brincat
Dr. Ray Galea

The Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology is situated at St. Luke's Hospital which is the University of Malta teaching hospital as well as the main hospital of the National Health Service. It services the whole Maltese population which numbers around 375000 people.

The Obstetrics unit caters for some 90% of the 4000 deliveries that occur on the island annually.

The Gynaecology unit handles both emergency and also elective cases. It is the major centre on the island and so caters for most of the gynaecology problems.

Several subspeciality clinics are also present within the unit, these comprise a Recurrent Miscarraige clinic, an Endocrinology clinic, an Osteoporosis clinic, and a Diabetes in pregnancy clinic.

The main research interests of this unit are:
  • the menopause and its related problems mostly with regards to collagen deficiency
  • reproductive endocrinology
  • recurrent miscarraiges
This unit in Malta has carried out research on various aspects of the menopause especially on the deleterious effects of this estrogen deficient state on the collagen, namely in skin and also in osteoporosis and osteoporotic fractures. We have been involved in several international multicentre studies dealing with gynaecological endocrinology. And have also carried original research on phytoestrogens with promising results. The unit is fully equipped both at a personnel level and also as regards equipment to carry out research projects besides catering for the normal care of our population.
